The Boycott Caltex group formed a few months ago. It started off as a Melbourne & Geelong thing but other states are now on board: SA, WA, NT & NSW.
We organised a webinar on Wed night MC’d by Nasser Mashni from APAN with speakers: Omar Baghouti, founder of the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC); Elyse Cunningham from Friends of the Earth; & Rand Khatib from BDS Youth Australia. It was fabulous & over 120 people attended from around Oz & Aotearoa. Recording is here:
Caltex is owned by Chevron which is mining LNG off the coast of Gaza but all the royalties & licence fees are going to Israel. Chevron is in the top tier of BDS targets identified by the BNC which is calling for an international boycott.
Chevron is also guilty of atrocious environmental crimes. This campaign is an opportunity to bring the climate movement & the struggle for Palestine &, hopefully the anti-war movement more broadly, together.
We are holding our second National Day of Action on Sat 5th Oct which consists of pro-Palestine groups holding rallies at their local/nearest Caltex servos, all at different times.
These are easy to organise & can be done with a small number of people.
Choose a Caltex servo, preferably on a busy road or intersection. Pick a time. Take a couple of Palestinian flags & placards that say “Caltex fuels genocide”, “Toot for caltex to stop fueling genocide” etc that are big enough for passing motorists to read. Have some leaflets to hand out to motorists entering the servo & pedestrian passers by & hang out there for an hour. No speakers required. It’s a rally not a blockade/picket. Your message can reach a large number of people with just a handful of activists.
See our Instagram @boycottcaltex for photos of our first action.
We also have bumper stickers to give out so if your group decides to do an action on 5th Oct, please provide an address we can post them to.
If 5th Oct is too short notice, we will, probably do one more National Day of Action, probably late Nov.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
