May Day arrests

This is a query to the union members and their organisations that participate in the annual May Day celebrations in Brisbane. I make this request because of police intervention resulting in a number of arrests in 2024. Two of those people arrested on May Day will be before the Magistrates Court again in George Street on 12 March 2025 at 9am. We ask for your support on that day.

QUERY: Does the Queensland Council of Unions give a notice of intention to the Queensland Police Commissioner under the Peaceful Assembly Act 1992 for the annual labour day march?

Is the following answer to my query correct?

The Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) typically organizes the annual Labour Day march in Queensland, Australia, as a celebration of workers’ rights and achievements. Under Queensland’s Peaceful Assembly Act 1992, organizers of public assemblies, including marches, are required to give notice of their intention to hold such an event to the relevant authorities, usually the police.

Key Points:

  1. Notice of Intention:
    • The QCU, as the organizer, is required to submit a Notice of Intention to Hold a Public Assembly to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) at least 5 business days before the event. This notice includes details such as the date, time, location, route, and expected number of participants.
  2. Purpose of the Notice:
    • The notice ensures that the event is conducted peacefully and safely, allowing police to manage traffic, public safety, and any potential disruptions.
  3. Labour Day March:
    • The Labour Day march is a well-established event, and the QCU has a history of complying with legal requirements, including submitting the necessary notices. The march is generally well-coordinated and peaceful.
  4. Police Cooperation:
    • The QPS typically works closely with event organizers to ensure the march proceeds smoothly, reflecting the cooperative spirit of the Peaceful Assembly Act.

If you are looking for specific details about a particular year’s notice, you can contact the Queensland Council of Unions or the Queensland Police Service for confirmation. The QCU’s website or social media channels may also provide information about the event and its compliance with legal requirements.”
